Make your long weekend a celebration of summer

Summer is many things: a time to relax, an opportunity to get outdoors and reconnect with nature, a great reason to spend quality time with friends and family, and for many families with young kids, an extra busy time of year. (Like, really busy.) That said, it’s a beautiful season that often feels like a gift and a blessing, and we’ve always treated it as such.

At VG Meats, we love summer—and not just for the grilling. As Labour Day weekend approaches and we head into fall, we hope you make your long weekend a celebration of all things summer: friends, family, nature, relaxation, laughter and of course, delicious local food. Here’s a look back on some of our summer highlights—we hope this inspires you to reflect on your own happy memories from the past few months.

Our pastured chickens were incredible!

For the past few years, we’ve been raising chickens on pasture at the Van Groningen family farm. In case you missed it: here’s a blog post about how and why we do it, and another one on how delicious it is. This year, our pastured chickens were incredibly successful, and the customer feedback was fantastic. We’re thrilled to offer this product and look forward to doing it again next year. Until then, get the last of this year’s supply before it’s gone. It won’t be long!

We got to watch Dave prepare for competition

One of our longtime butchers is on his way to Sacramento, California for an international butcher competition and we couldn’t be more excited for him. Over the past couple of years, we’ve watched Dave hone his skills even further than before, constantly learning and growing within the craft of butchery. We’re proud to cheer Dave on as part of Team Canada, and grateful he’s a part of our team. If you missed our recent post about this event, read more about it here. Go Dave! You’ve got this.

We welcomed plenty of new faces to the farm

This year, we made it a goal to welcome more of our retail and administrative staff to the VG family farm to help them gain a more thorough understanding of how we grow and process our beef, poultry and more—and they came by the dozen! It was an amazing experience for our staff and for our farmhands, who got to share their passion and skills with a great audience. We also welcomed groups from some of our longtime partners, like 100km Foods, sharing everything we know about holistic practices that lead to regenerative outcomes on the farm. These farm tours are something we’ll keep doing for years to come!

As always, we made it about family

In addition to all of the great experiences we had as a business, we were also able to spend wonderful time together as a family this summer. This included a lot of multigenerational dinners with plenty of kids running around (often under Grandma’s loving and watchful eye). We cooked together, we shared stories and we enjoyed each other’s company (yes, even after working together all week). Family is everything, and summer is the perfect opportunity to gather with the people we love most in the world. We hope you did the same!

So, that’s a wrap on summer 2022. We’re grateful for the wonderful times we’ve had, and look forward to a fantastic fall season ahead. Our retail locations will be open on Saturday (closed Sunday and Monday) and our online store is always open at VGFarmToCity.ca. Have a safe and happy Labour Day weekend, everyone—we hope it feels like the perfect end to a great summer.
