Your guide to a delicious Easter dinner
The Easter Bunny is on his way and in just over a week, you’ll be enjoying a delicious holiday meal with your loved ones. Some families have tried and true menus they keep year after year, but others are hosting for the first time or looking to switch things up. If you’re mulling over what to serve this Easter, we’ve got a simple guide to lead the way and inspire some tasty choices. Thanks for shopping local and supporting regenerative food—if you have any questions, please contact us!
Choose your main
The star of every holiday dinner is typically the main course. For Easter, we suggest a traditional roast turkey or ham, but you can also serve a prime rib roast or other family favourite. It’s perfectly acceptable to serve two different meats—we recommend turkey and ham or turkey and prime rib, but just about anything works if you prepare them well and offer side dishes that complement both proteins. Here’s a quick list of shortcuts to popular main course options:
- Whole fresh turkey
- Whole smoked turkey
- Roast turkey dinner (fully cooked, available in different sizes)
- Country-style ham and Black Forest ham
- Aged Prime Rib Roast
- Turducken
We also have smaller pieces of turkey available as well as half-sized hams. If you’re looking for something that’s not on our holiday pre-order site, check out VGFarmToCity.ca or call us directly—we’d be happy to help you find everything you need.
Select some sides
Delicious side dishes are a holiday must. We recommend starting with a great potato (mashed, baked, scalloped, roasted—whatever works) plus a few different vegetables. Try to offer variety in colour, texture and flavour—for example, roasted brussels sprouts with mashed sweet potatoes and yellow beans sauteed with garlic. Here are a few recipes to inspire your side dishes:
- Rosemary roasted potatoes via Ina Garten
- Hasselback potatoes by Love and Lemons
- Old school Duchess Potatoes by Simply Recipes
- Roasted carrots or roasted green beans by Well Plated
- Maple roasted squash with pecans
- Arugula and roasted carrot salad by Ahead of Thyme
- Cheesy leeks via BBC
A few reminders: you’ll also want to plan your stuffing, gravy, ham glazes and other finishing touches at this point. These items tie your whole meal together! And remember, you can also order fully prepared side dishes from VG Meats—just heat and serve.
Bread, wine, dessert
You’re almost to the finish line, but there are a few final menu items to consider. Fresh rolls or a warm baguette is a must—we recommend getting something fresh from a local bakery (we often have options at our retail locations in Simcoe and Stoney Creek). Decide what you’re offering for dessert—a pie, a platter of cookies and squares, a scoop of ice cream—and be sure to have lots of coffee and tea on hand. If you’re serving alcohol, consider picking up some craft beer and local wine before the holiday. This is going to be a delicious meal!
