What to eat this Valentine’s Day and Family Day weekend

Love is in the air! Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and on Monday, it’s Family Day in Ontario. We’re big on celebrating love in all its forms, whether it’s the love you share with your partner or the love you feel for your kids, parents, grandparents and friends. With these dates coming up fast, what better reason do you need to cook up some delicious, high quality local food to enjoy with your loved ones? Here are a few ideas to get you started—thanks and have a wonderful long weekend!

Valentine’s Day meal ideas

Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to indulge in a delectable tomahawk steak. This gorgeous cut of Ontario beef is generously portioned, so it typically serves two people. Serve it with baked or mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables with a drizzle of balsamic reduction, and/or your favourite side salad. Don’t forget a nice bottle of wine and an elegant dessert! This meal is truly hard to beat. Other options for Valentine’s Day include our prime rib steaks, beef tenderloin steaks, whole chickens for roasting, smoked pork chops or our amazing pork tenderloin roasts.

Family Day food inspiration

If you’re cooking for a crowd, a traditional roast dinner is an excellent choice for Family Day. Consider a beef top sirloin roast, boneless pork loin roast, beef inside hip roast, cornish hens or a classic black forest ham—or, go all out with an incredible prime rib roast. We recommend having a variety of family-friendly side dishes such as mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles or rice, roasted carrots or parsnips, steamed broccoli, peas and other favourites. You can also prepare a large salad (Caesar is usually a hit with both kids and adults). For dessert, consider brownies and ice cream—if you add sprinkles for the kids, it will feel extra special.

Cozy “anytime” meals to enjoy

Looking for more meal ideas? With weather like this, we’re loving meals like beef stew (try ours or make your own), chicken pot pie, tourtiere, homestyle lasagna (make your own or try this delicious prepared option) and roasted chicken (save the bones for incredible homemade soup or bone broth). Anything that can be prepared in a slow cooker is a good idea, plus sheet pan meals, one-pot dishes and simple roasts. This is one of the best parts of winter—the cozy, warming, delicious meals we make at home!
