We understand the appeal—all of these cuts are incredible—but if you’re looking for alternatives at a lower price point, there are plenty of lesser-known options that will wow even the most discerning steak lover.

Delmonico. This is a fantastic cut with high marbling that’s very similar to a classic ribeye. We often recommend this cut for dinner parties or special occasions, but given its excellent price point, it’s great for everyday grilling as well. Kyle VG keeps a box of Delmonicos in his freezer, so you know they’re good!

If you want something unique, go with…

A flank steak or a skirt steak. These cuts are often overlooked but both are incredibly tender and delicious. A flank steak is a lean, versatile cut that is delicious over salad or marinated and sliced (VG carries this cut in store). Skirt steaks are often used in fajitas—they’re similar to a flank steak, but even more tender—but they’re awesome when served as the centre of the plate. Skirt steaks are extremely popular in Argentina, and Kyle VG often chooses this cut at home. It’s definitely worth trying if you haven’t already—this is a nice one to add to your grilling repertoire!

If you’re looking for something extra tender…

Try a flatiron steak. This affordable option is very tender, offers excellent flavour and melts in your mouth. It’s easy to grill or pan sear, and pairs well with just about any side dish. A flatiron is a shoulder cut of beef that’s also known as also known as a top blade steak or top blade fillet, and when butchered well, its quality rivals many more expensive cuts of beef. It’s amazing taste at great value—always a good choice.
