Life is busy. It doesn’t matter if you’re single, coupled up or raising a small herd of children - we’ve all got a lot going on, and it can be hard to find enough time (and energy!) to make a good meal. For some households, the solution is meal-prepping or batch cooking, but it’s easy to get tired of the same menu on repeat. Our suggestion? Use VG Meats to minimize cooking and still get a variety of delicious, healthy meals all week long. Here’s an example of how to grill chicken once and get three separate meals.
We love supporting local businesses, and for good reason - they contribute to our community and economy, they’re awesome and hey...we own one ourselves, too! With a family farm in Simcoe as well as stores in both Norfolk County and Hamilton, Ontario, VG meets a lot of producers. We love our jams, jellies, hot sauces and local produce, but there’s one thing we don’t sell (but love just as much): a nice, cold beer from a local area brewery.
If you love beer as much as we do, it’s time to grab some of your favourite VG Meat products, prepare them with loving care and enjoy with a nice, crisp local brew. Here are our top picks for craft breweries in VG’s own backyard (Hamilton and Simcoe area).
There’s a common dilemma that many consumers feel: wanting quality products without having to pay “quality” prices. At VG Meats, we believe in offering an amazing product at the best possible price - it’s a commitment we’ve made and one of the reasons our customers keep coming back. Everything we produce or sell is guaranteed to be local, delicious and of exceptional quality - no exceptions, no excuses.
That said, we understand that sometimes, you could get cheaper meat from a large chain store. Their chicken may be on sale for less than ours is - so why would you pay more to buy the same product?
Canada Day is arguably one of the best holidays of the year. It’s summer, it’s our nation’s birthday, and everyone gathers together in celebration. Oh, and there’s ALWAYS an amazing backyard BBQ (or two or three). It’s basically Christmas, but without the sub-zero temperatures or the pressure to find gifts for everyone in your life. (Also, with more fireworks.)
If you’re the one hosting friends this weekend, be sure to check out our current specials and visit us in store soon. We will be closed Sunday and Monday but are open normal store hours Friday and Saturday.
Hey there, VGtarians - we’ve got big news!
VG Meats products are now being sold at select Farm Boy and Metro stores across Ontario. That’s right - we’re making it easier to get your favourite VG products by making them available in your local grocery shops. (Read on to learn more, including product and locations details!)
Making VG Meats accessible to more Ontario families
We have two amazing retail shops of our own - the original VG Meats location in Simcoe plus our spacious Stoney Creek store. This is where we’ll continue to carry an extensive selection of VG Meats beef, poultry and pork products as well as local condiments, baked goods and produce. You can come in to either store or order your favourite products online - whatever you prefer!
This weekend, it’s all about dads. Sunday, June 15th is Father’s Day, and we’re proud to celebrate our dad, Wayne Van Groningen, along with the other great fathers in our lives. We’re lucky to have our grandpas, uncles and extended family, friends, coworkers and neighbours to look at as examples of amazing fathers. And naturally, Father’s Day has taken on whole new meaning since all four VG brothers are now dads!
As the weekend approaches, here are three quick and easy gift ideas. Happy Father’s Day!
One of the greatest things about summer is being outside at local music and food festivals. We’ve got a great one coming up this weekend in Delaware, Ontario (just outside of London). If you love BBQ, smoked meat and good times, come out to Oma’s Big Green Egg Food Festival (or “Eggfest”) - a celebration of the Big Green Egg!
Local food producers come together
We were thrilled to be invited to this great event by our friend Brad at BJ’s Country Market. Brad has created something fun for his customers that brings the community together in a celebration of local food and seriously good cooking. The VG Meats team loves supporting this type of event and looks forward to serving up some amazing Norfolk County beef this weekend!
If you’ve been following our blog posts throughout the months of April and May, you probably noticed a theme. We’ve been talking about our aged beef: the 60 day aged, custom aged prime rib and other cuts, our incredible whiskey-aged beef and more. It’s been on sale through our #SocialBeef promotion (which ends TODAY - get yours now by using the hashtag #SocialBeef to get 10% off your order).
VG Meats is a true working farm in Simcoe that has been in the Van Groningen family for four generations. Most of our customers are familiar with our retail locations in Simcoe and Stoney Creek, but fewer people get to see the actual farm in action. To help customers get a sense of what life is like on the VG family farm, we’ve asked brother Cory to do some filming as he goes about his day. Here are two of his first videos, which we shared on Facebook last week. We hope you enjoy this peek into our business and our home!
Blue skies, fresh grass & happy chickens
Ever wonder where our pasture-raised chicken spends their days? On lush, green grass at the VG farm. Our chicken shelters keep our chickens safe from coyotes and other predators and can be easily moved by hand. We reposition the shelters every day, ensuring that the chickens are always on fresh, comfortable green grass and clover. This isn’t just nice for the chickens - it’s nice for the environment, since we avoid unnecessary daily use of diesel-fueled farm equipment for this task.
It’s going to be a beautiful Victoria Day weekend and we all know what that means: it’s time to get your yard in shape for the months ahead. Some of you will be gardening or cutting the grass while others will be opening the pool - whatever type of weekend warrior you are, be sure to schedule in some time for an amazing barbeque. Let’s welcome the warm weather, chase away the rain and celebrate the long weekend! Here’s what you could be grilling in a few days.
Winner winner chicken dinner
We’ve got boneless, skinless chicken breasts (a customer favourite), bone-in chicken breasts that are full of flavour, and a number of other poultry options. If you checked out this week’s specials, you may have noticed that whole chickens are on sale - so load up! We’ve also got jumbo tip wings (SO GOOD) and chicken sausages (perfect for the grill). Chicken is great on the bbq with your favourite sauce or spice rub. Try it with grilled veggies or over baby spinach, pine nuts, red onions and goat’s cheese. Anything goes!
Family is everything, and as Mother’s Day approaches, we’re thinking about all of the amazing moms in our lives. First of all, there’s Mom VG, who we talked about in last year’s blog post (read it here). Mom VG is an incredible mother and grandma (“Nanny” to the VG grandkids), not to mention a great wife, friend, businesswoman and community member. We think she’s a superstar and could find a reason to celebrate her every day!
There’s also the women us VG brothers are lucky enough to share our lives with: our wives, who are not only mothers to our children but also phenomenal individuals. We are so grateful for Heidi (Cory), Nicole (Chad), Raelynn (Kyle) and Morgan (Kevin). Thank you for being the heart and soul of our homes, amazing mothers and partners, and all-around good people. Each one of you is loved and appreciated!
Living in Ontario means having access to amazing local meat, produce, wine, beer and spirits – something we feel passionate about and don’t take for granted. When it comes to making our whiskey-aged beef, we definitely have a favourite bottle to pour from: 40 Creek Barrel Select. Not only is this whiskey rich, flavourful and smooth, it’s distilled in nearby Grimsby, Ontario. Eating local and drinking local come together when we whiskey-age our beef, and the results are incredible. What more could any VG-tarian want?
